Pupil Premium Grant is awarded to all children who are eligible for Free School Meals or have parents who are service personnel.  If you think you are eligible for Free School Meals then please come into the school office in confidence for advice.  Your child does not have to take the school meal offered to receive the grant.

  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.
  • We ensure that appropriate provision is made for all pupils who are vulnerable, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and learning needs addressed.
  • In making provision for our pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.
  • We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals.
  • Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time.



Nature of support  2018/19

Class teachers and Teaching Assistants are fully aware of the relevant children and target their support accordingly.  These children remain targeted children at all times with directed support in addition to the normal focussed support in class. 

For the 2018/19 academic year, a qualified teacher has been employed for a period of three days per week to focus support in dialogue with individual class teachers.  This is an increase from the previous year.  Support includes both 1:1 and group sessions.  Progress is measured by tracking achievement throughout the year. 

In addition, those children needing access to extra-curricular events, such as Y3, 4 and 6 residential trips, are subsidised to ensure inclusion.  The children are also encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities to develop key skills and self-esteem.  Furthermore, these children are eligible for a school-based grant of £100 each towards clothing. 

These pupils are further supported throughout school through the increased provision of iPads and Chrome books. 


Measuring the impact of PPG spending

A variety of measures will be used to assess the impact of the PPG spending, including end of year scores, reading level scores and one-to-one dialogue.  Importantly, increased involvement and motivation cannot be measured but simply observed. 

The impact of extra support and interventions put into place to support these children is monitored termly and forms part of the discussion between the Headteacher and class teacher during pupil progress meetings.  Analysis of this data is also reported to the Governors’ Curriculum and Standards committee and a governor is linked to Pupil Premium to maintain its profile. 

Comparisons between Disadvantaged children and the whole school show little difference in achievement.
